[Binding with arms]. [RIENCOURT (Simon de)]. Histoire de Louis XIII dit le Juste. Paris, chez Michel Brunet, 1695. In-12, [1] f., 360 p., [4] f., 18th c. basane fauve mouchetée, 5-rib spine, havana title-piece, decorated caissons with gilt fleurons and double gilt fillet, boards framed with double gilt fillet, gilt fleurons at corners, gilt coat of arms in center, gilt fillet at edges, gilt roulette at endpapers, gilt edges (snags on lower board, foot and one headband rubbed, rare freckling). A fine example of an agonothete binding bearing the arms of Anne Léon de Montmorency (1705-1785), founder of a prize awarded here to the student Jean-Baptiste Bernard in 1770, with a handwritten mention of this award covering a flyleaf. The work, which forms Volume VII of the "Abrégé de l'Histoire de France, depuis Faramond jusqu'au règne de Louis le Grand", is illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece featuring the portrait of Louis XIII, and that of Anne of Austria in medallion. Provenance: Léon de Bastard d'Estang (1822-1860), historian, archaeologist and collector (bookplate).
