Rare first edition. The privilege is dated March 29, 1691, and the approval given by Vauban himself is dated Paris, March 2, 1691. The illustration consists of a folding copper-engraved plan hors-texte, two copper-engraved vignettes at the head of the page, one of which is signed J. Mariette, and numerous wood-engraved geometrical figures in the text. A very fine tribute copy bearing the arms of the Le Prestre de Vauban family. Two old handwritten bookplates on the endpapers, one "Gouyon", the other crossed out.
