Le tout recueilly de plusieurs livres tant imprimez que manuscrits et des archives et registres de l'église cathédrale des abbayes et autres lieux de la province de Normandie... A Roüen, chez L. Maurry, 1667. In-folio, [6] f., 680 p., [4] f. (table), contemporary brown calf, 6-ribbed spine (worn binding, cover lac. on spine, gilt, blackened boards; extensive light spotting at beginning and end of vol. and in middle margin; lack replaced in margin of title; without portrait). Fine Norman provenance: "Ce livre appartient à Hiacinthe Flamand sculpteur en ivoire grande rue à Dieppe 1827" (handwritten note on title). Further mention on a handwritten label dated Dieppe, October 10, 1861, on the flyleaf: "Ce volume rare et précieux m'a été cédé par l'abbé Cochet...". Autograph signatures of prelates, cut out, are pasted on the lower flyleaf. (Frère II, 398).

Normandie - [HARLAY DE CHAMPVALLON (François de)]. Le Mercure de Gaillon, ou Recueil des pièces curieuses, tant hiérarchiques que politiques. Gaillon, Imprimerie du château archiépiscopal, 1643-1644. 24 pieces in one vol. in-4 marbled fawn calf, ornate spine, title page, red edges (18th century binding). Slight restorations. First edition of this extremely rare private printing. Gaillon had been the domain of the archbishops of Rouen since Georges d'Amboise bequeathed it to the diocese. François II de Harlay de Champvallon (1586-1653) was first coadjutor, then archbishop of Rouen (1614-1651, he resigned his see in favor of his nephew François III). A remarkable administrator and reformer, he also had literary ambitions, which found expression in his residence, where he founded an Academy and printed a number of opuscules. He didn't need printing permission from the Parliament of Rouen, which was necessary in his capital. The presses were in operation from 1608 under the management of Henri III Estienne, one of Robert II's sons. This copy is complete with all his pieces, as listed in the table, printed separately at the outset and each with its own title or title page; they concern the history of Normandy, or that of the archdiocese of Rouen (Detailed list on request.) (Frère II, 304. Brunet III, 1646.) A good copy.
