[Engraving]. [Costume, fashion]. Important collection of steel engravings and lithographs, all colored, showing in particular ball outfits and theater costumes. 19th c. One volume in-4, early 20th c. brown corner half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt title "Costumes et travestissement" on spine and upper board, all mounted on tabs (spine rubbed, corners dull). The album comprises around 130 plates, 61 of which are full-page, from various suites, "Nouveaux travestissements", "Travestissements de cette année", "Bal fashionables de l'Opéra", etc.; and 72 in-8 format, pasted 2 by 2 on 36 plates, from a series of theater costumes published by Hautecoeur-Martinet. At the end of the volume are 15 handwritten leaves with watercolor and gouache drawings of dresses and accessories and notes on the composition of these costumes, including a superb "costume worn by Countess Duchâtel at the Duchess Pozzo di Borgo's ball". Provenance: Robert de Billy (1859-1963), ambassador, close friend of Marcel Proust (bookplate); Daniel Appia (bookplate).
