Maurice Barrès, born in Charmes (Vosges) in 1862 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Seine) on December 4, 1923, was a French writer and politician, and a leading figure in French nationalism. The main thrust of his thought is "the cult of the ego". He asserts that our first duty is to defend our ego against the "Barbarians", i.e. against anything that might weaken it in the development of its own sensibility. The second axis is summed up by the expression "la terre et les morts" ("the earth and the dead"), which testifies to Maurice Barrès's evolution towards republican nationalism and traditionalism, his attachment to roots, the family, the army and the native land. He remained one of the leading thinkers of the nationalist right between the wars. Copy number 193/220 on Rives vellum, the text printed by Boutitie and the engravings by Vernant. Bookplate of Dr. Courcoux. Illustrated with engravings by P.-A. Bouroux. Barrès' book deals with the relationship between a young Frenchwoman and a young German teacher during the terrible period of the Annexation (1870-1918). Certainly one of the finest illustrated books on the city of Metz. A very fine copy. Ex-libris Claude Hirtzmann.
