Owner's stamped ex-libris "From the b-ki N.K. Nikolsky" on the back of the front cover. Nikolai K. Nikolsky (1863-1936) was a Russian and Soviet church historian, literary critic, and bibliographer. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1916). The last work of N.V. Gogol (1809-1852), conceived in 1845, finished a few months before his death. During the writer's lifetime "Reflections..." was not published, the rough manuscript was discovered after the writer's death, in July 1852 S.P. Shevyrev read the manuscript in the Optina Desert. The first edition was realised with the help of A.P. Tolstoy in 1857 under the editorship of P.A. Kulish, during publication the manuscript was subjected to censorship edits. Before the revolution the book was repeatedly reprinted, in Soviet times the book was not published, it was published only in 1990. Bibliography: See.-Soc. No. 616.
