CATHERINE II – Russian Empress (1762-1796)

Manifesto recognising the innocence of Alexey Petrovich Bestuzhev-Ryumin, Restoration of His Countship, Ranks, Orders, and Appointment as Field Marshal General. Printed in St. Petersburg by the Senate on August 31, 1762. - [2] p.; 32.5x20 cm. Pasted onto a sheet with images of coins from 1762. Damage to fragments of paper with damage to the text. Alexey Petrovich Bestuzhev-Ryumin (1693-1766) was a Russian statesman and diplomat, Chancellor of the Russian Empire under Elizabeth Petrovna until his disgrace in 1758. After the 1762 coup, Catherine II restored all his rights and titles and promoted him to Field Marshal General; however, he no longer played an active role in the political life of the country. Bestuzhev-Ryumin was a great enthusiast of medal-making. He minted medals to commemorate the Treaty of Nystad (in 1721 and 1763), his exile (1757-1762), and the ascension of Catherine II to the throne (1763).

His father was retired colonel Pyotr Gavriilovich Bogoliubov, and his maternal grandfather was the well-known philosopher and social critic Alexander Radishchev. In 1841, Alexei graduated from military school, serving in the Russian Navy and travelling with the fleet to many countries. In 1849, he started to attend classes at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied under Maxim Vorobiev. The young painter was greatly influenced by Ivan Ayvazovsky. In 1853, he finished the Academy with a major Gold medal. From 1854 to 1860, he travelled around Europe and worked prolifically. In Rome, he was acquainted with Alexander Ivanov, who convinced Bogoliubov to focus more on drawing. In Düsseldorf, Bogoliubov took classes from the painter Andreas Achenbach. In Paris, he admired the artists of the Barbizon School, and became friends with the French painters Camille Corot and Charles Franсois Daubigny. Bogoliubov returned to Russia in 1860 where he exhibited his works in the Academy and received the title of professor. Bogoliubov is represented in the following collections: Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, and many other museum collections of Russia, amongst others.
