Ilya Iosifovich Kabakov (1933-2023) was a Soviet and American artist, a representative of Moscow conceptualism. He became internationally known in the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods for his installations, which explored feelings of alienation and boredom characteristic of Soviet everyday life. In recent years, he collaborated with his niece (later his wife), Emilia. In 2008, together with his wife, he was awarded the Emperor of Japan's artistic prize. Kabakov's works "The Beetle" ($5.8 million, 2008) and "Luxury Suite" ($4.1 million, 2006) are the two most expensive works of contemporary Russian art ever sold (both at Phillips de Pury auction, London). Since 1956, Ilya Kabakov began illustrating books for the publishing house "Detgiz" (since 1963 - "Children's Literature") and for magazines "Malysh," "Murzilka," "Veselye kartinki" [Merry Pictures].
