OPERA - RETHBERG Elisabeth (1894 - 1976) - Lot of four photographs Lot of four photographs, two of them signed (two larger support, two on postcard), one autograph letter and one printed document of the German soprano spinto. Richard Strauss assigned the role of the Empress in his “Die Frau ohne Schatten” to her at the Dresden Opera in 1919. She returned to Dresden often, including to appear in title role of “Die ägyptische Helena” in the world premiere. She also performed as Verdi's “Aida” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and La Scala in Milan. The autograph letter, dated “14. Aug. 1960” is addressed to Mr. Engels, thanking him for the flower at this arrival: “…Wenn auch sehr verspätet so durch nicht minder herzlich danke ich Ihnen für die grosse Freude die mir die schönen Blumen brachten bei meiner Ankunft… “. 1 p. Arthur Schnitzler autograph "Erzählende Schriften von Arthur Schnitzler", second volume: Novellen, Berlin im S. Fischer Verlag 1914, signed and dated "Wien, 4.11.1922" on title page, original cloth binding, gilt edges, 386 pages, with handwritten owner's name on endpaper and on a further page, format 8°, book block somewhat brittle, otherwise normal signs of age and minor signs of study.

Sigmund Freud Signed Photograph (1936) - Presented to a Harvard Psychiatrist Exceptional vintage matte-finish 6.5 x 9 photo of the pioneering psychoanalyst in a near-profile pose, affixed to its original 9 x 12 mount, signed on the mount in fountain pen, "Sigm. Freud, 1936." In fine condition, with a stain to the bottom border of the mount, very easily matted out if desired. The consignor notes that this signed photo was presented to Dr. Joseph Jules Michaels by Anna Freud, Sigmund's sixth and youngest child. Dr. Michaels was a professor of Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis at Harvard University from 1936 until his death in 1966. Dr. Michaels' extensive research dealt in the causes of delinquency and impulse character disorders. He was the author of more than 90 articles and books in the field. Beginning in 1933, he trained at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Institute as a Commonwealth Fund Fellow. During WWII, as a major in the Medical Corps, he was chief of neuropsychiatric service at the Newton D. Baker Hospital, later receiving the Legion of Merit. Anna Freud gifted this photo to Michaels in Vienna as the two of them studied dream interpretation together.

Lucian Freud Autograph Letter Signed British painter (1922-2011) known for his psychologically intense, thickly impastoed portrait and figure paintings. Very rare ALS in pencil, one page, 8.5 x 8.25, no date, but circa January 1984. Letter to Angela Dyer, in full: "Lawrence Gowing sent me a copy of your letter to him. I don't know if he's had any letters about the book but I certainly have not. Though I am rather immune to abuse and praise I had a feeling of exitement [sic] on reading what you wrote that I've only felt on suddenly coming across someone I really like the look of. So, right in the middle of painting my mothers stomach this morning, I read it again." In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter from artist Lawrence Gowing, dated January 24, 1984, thanking Dyer for her "totally rewarding and transporting fan letter," and noting that he "sent it straight on to Lucian...You may have already heard from him." Also includes the original mailing envelope for the letter from Gowing, who, in 1982, published the art book Lucian Freud, which examines the development of Freud’s paintings and drawings, discusses his artistic influences, and analyzes his style of portraiture.
