Description

HANAU, vers 1770-1780 Oval snuffbox in two-tone (750) gold, decorated on all sides with fleurettes and chased reserves of concentric chevron circles on the lid and base, and wavy lines on the profile, in molded frames adorned with translucent midnight-blue enamel on a background of ribbon courses or opaque white fillets, and four pilasters (on the profile) with floral cartouches adorned with a drop. Edges highlighted with stylized pearl necklaces. Hinged lid. Goldsmith's hallmark: attributed to the TOUSSAINT brothers [L.F.T.], active in HANAU between 1762 and 1814. Prestige hallmarks in imitation of Parisian hallmarks: De la Jurande de 1773 [K couronné] on the reverse of the lid and on the body. From the Décharge de PARIS for Oct. 1750-Oct. 1756 [chicken's head] on the rabbet. Repoinçonnée en FRANCE à la tête d'Aigle sur la feuillure. Gross weight: 78 g. - 29 x 66 x 49 mm. Some wear and scratches; enamel: minor flaws, including open bubbles, and a few bumps and chips. To be compared with an oval multi-tone gold (750) snuffbox, without enamels, with lid centered with a swirl, made by Germain CHAYE (Master in Paris in 1755 and active until 1791), dated 1774-1775, and sold by Christie's, London, on December 5, 2018.
