Indeed, we have few traces of his early works, which are necessarily classical in the tradition of the lessons he took in Paris in evening classes with the landscape painters Caruelle d'Aligny and Jules Coignet in the years 1834-1839, or with Corot from 1839 onwards. We would place this work in the very early stages of the painter's career, as it offers all the components of a painting executed in the studio, no doubt after a pochade taken on the spot. Composition, light, backlighting, setting sun, leafy grove on the left, and 2 shaken dead trees standing out in the evening light. It was in Italy that Ravier found his style and light, from 1840 to 1848, and this painting, guaranteed by the studio stamp, remains unique in its genre..."
