Alexey Stepanovich Stepanov (Russian, 1858-1923), 1894 oil on canvas painting depicting a view of the Volga river in the sunset. Signed lower left. Housed in an old gilt wood and gesso frame. Note: Born in 1958 in Simferopol, Alexei Stepanovitch Stepanov grew up in an orphanage in Moscow from 1863 on after the death of his parents. From 1880 to 1884 he studied under Illarion Pryanishnikov, Vasily Polenov, and Yewgraf Sorokin at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1899 on Stepanov held a professorship there and taught young painting students at the Moscow Academy until 1918. Dimensions: 19 x 25 3/4 in., (48.5 x 65 cm.) The canvas has been restored at three spots and appears to be strong. Few paint flakes at the bottom right corner.
