FRAGET WARSZAWA SILVER PLATED FINELY CHISELLED AND DECORATED WITH FIGURES CHAMPAGNE BUCKET, CIRCA 1860-1872 Marks: inscription ‘FRAGET W WARSZAWIE’ (‘FRAGET IN WARSZAW’) placed in the oval, ‘N’ in the rhomb means ‘silver plating on alpaca’, the coat of arms of the coppersmiths' corporation (two crossed hammers with a pair of compasses) in the small oval, ‘GALW:’ for ‘GALWANIZACJA’ (GALVANISATION) (on the underside) H. 30 cm, diameter of the base 25 cm executed circa 1860-1872 The brothers Alphonse and Joseph Fraget, two French jewellers, arrived in Warsaw at the beginning of the 19th century to start the production of relatively cheap silver table ware. They used the new French technology, copper base with a fused silver layer, called ‘SILVER PLATE’. In 1830, the firm received its first award for the high quality of its products and artistic design, thus establishing the flawless reputation which was kept over a long period of time. When the elder brother Alphonse returned to France, Józef Fraget (1797 – 1867) decided to expand his business and very soon the Józef Fraget enterprise became one of the largest silver-plating enterprises in the world.
