Salome with the Head of the Baptist 1875 92 x 68 cm The painting, as evidenced by the cartouche on the back, was part of the prestigious collection of the prominent French art connoisseur and dealer Alfred Baillehache - Lamotte (1870 - 1922), who was also known for initiating an early attempt to catalogue the works of Gustave Moreau. The sale of his collection at auction at the Hotel Drout after his death in 1922 is noteworthy. Signed and dated at lower left: "A Besnard Rome 7 1875." On the back cartouche bearing the inscription: Exposition Gustave Moreau - M. A. Baillehache. Authentication on photograph from Galerie Saint Martin, Strasbourg. In coeval giltwood frame decorated with pastille.
