KAJIKAWA AND TEISHO: A FINE FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH ARIWARA NO NARIHIRA KAJIKAWA AND TEISHO: A FINE FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH ARIWARA NO NARIHIRA By a member of the Kajikawa family (lacquerwork) and by Teisho (inlays), signed Kajikawa saku and Teisho Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A richly lacquered four-case inro inlaid with stained bone and mother-of-pearl showing the poet and courtier Ariwara no Narihira, richly dressed in courtly garments and seated in a boat, surrounded by a landscape with mountains, a lake, pine trees and flying birds. The lacquer technique used is takamaki-e with much gold as well as gold kirikane; the moon and its reflection on the water with silver, which has turned black with age. Gold nashiji on the interior of the cases. Signed KAJIKAWA saku [made by Kajikawa] in gold on the underside and signed TEISHO on a mother-of-pearl tablet. HEIGHT 8.7 CM Condition: Overall in good condition, with minor expected wear to the lacquer, particularly around the edges.

The interior lacquered red. HEIGHT 6.2 cm, LENGTH 7.1 cm Condition: Wear, flaking, losses to case edges and corners, few cracks, some scratches, and tiny nicks, otherwise presenting well. Provenance: From a Danish antiquities dealer. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.

A FINE BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING ISE-EBI AND AWABI A FINE BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING ISE-EBI AND AWABI Japan, 18 th-19 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of upright rectangular form and lenticular section, bearing a lustrous roiro ground and lacquered in silver, gold, and deep red takamaki-e depicting to the front a large ise-ebi (spiny lobster) and to the back a single large awabi (abalone), inlaid with gold foil, surrounded by smaller clams and seaweed. The imagery is evocative of the New Year’s celebrations. HEIGHT 6.3 cm, LENGTH 5.5 cm Condition: Good condition with minuscule nibbling to lacquer to the edges, some tiny nicks here and there, a few small dents from contact with an ojime to the top case.
