BYZANTIN RELIQUARY CROSS DITE ENCOLPION, BYZANTIN EMPIRE 13th-14th CENTURIES gold, rock crystal, traces of enamel. The cross opens with a hinge at the bélière, closed at the bottom by a key. Six rock-crystal cabochons covering small, faded phylacteries are set on each side. The backgrounds show traces of enamel, black on the front and turquoise on the reverse; the borders and cross are finely guilloché.
