Portraits of Timurid and Mughal rulers, India, Company School, late 19th - early 20th century Medallion frame housing nineteen bust portraits of rulers painted in gouache on card stock cut into medallions and glued to a gilded background. The portraits, whose names are captioned with a European-style transcription, represent sovereigns of the Timurid dynasty such as Tamerlane or Mirân Shâh, as well as Mughal emperors such as Akbar, Jahangir, or Alamgir I and Indian sultans such as Sultan Mahmûd or Mizz ud-dîn. Total diam.: 22 cm; portrait diam.: approx. 4 cm; central portrait diam.: 4.7 cm Some stains and retouching (mainly on the portrait backgrounds), gilding and folds in the gilded background. Bāber, the founder in India of the Mughal dynasty, was a Chaghātai Turk, who, through his father, descended from Timūr-Lang (Tamerlan). Abu al-Ghazi Bahadur was a khan of the Khiva khanate from 1643 to 1663, famous for his historical work Genealogy of the Turks. Mir-Ali-Chir-Nevâï, a Perso-Uzbek philosopher and poet of the Chaghataï language, translator into Turkish of The Language of Birds, written in Persian. A rare book.
