Paris, Louis, 1792. 8 vol. in-4, light brown calf, double cold fillet framing the boards, ornate smooth spine, fawn title page, green round tomonnage, "PWS" monogram at foot (period binding). A complete copy of the 812 costume plates "beautifully engraved by Duclos, Giffart, de Poilly and Thomassin" (Colas). This 1792 edition includes a few rare copies - such as this one - whose plates were colored at the time: "only copies whose figures are colored are of any value" (Brunet). Pl. 29 of vol. 7 duplicated, pl. 99 of vol. 8 misplaced on p. 432 in vol. 7. Franciscan priest and historian Pierre Hélyot (1660-1716) worked for 25 years on his Histoire des ordres monastiques, religieux et militaires et des congrégations seculières, published from 1714 to 1719. Some volumes were published posthumously with the help of Maximilien BULLOT, another religious. Heraldic ex-libris of the Belgian noble Powis family (18th-19th c.) and ex-legato Zenonis de Viron, 1856. Discreet restorations (headpieces), rubbing and minor spotting, many browned pages, small angular tear with loss on p. 37 of vol. 5, many browned pages, occasional small foxing and marginal stains, otherwise a very fine copy in contemporary binding, rare in color. (Brunet, III, p. 91; Colas, no. 1419).
