Bronze Icon of the Protection of the Virgin. Moscow, first half of the 19th century. In the Church of the Blachernes, the Virgin on the left, facing Christ in the upper left-hand corner, has her veil placed over her forearms. She is followed by a procession of saints, with two angels above them. Below, in the center, St. Roman the Melodian on a dais with Patriarch Taraise and a priest on the left, Emperor Leo VI in the imperial box between the two levels and, on the right, St. Andrew the Mad showing the Virgin to his disciple Epiphanius. The icon is framed by a frieze of foliage. The icon is surmounted by a bulb featuring the New Testament Trinity, surrounded by seven seraphim. Cast bronze, blue and white cold enamel.
