Bronze Icon of the Protection of the Virgin. Moscow, second half of the 19th century. In the Church of the Blachernes, the Virgin Mary on the left, facing Christ in the upper left-hand corner, has her veil placed over her forearms. She is followed by a procession of seven saints surmounted by a cohort of angels. Below, in the center, St. Roman the Melodian on a dais with, on the left, Patriarch Taraise and Emperor Constantine on a dais and, on the right, St. Andrew the Mad showing the Virgin to his disciple Epiphanius and Empress Helena. The icon is framed by a frieze of foliage. The icon is surmounted by a bulb featuring the New Testament Trinity in a braided crown, surrounded by two archangels surmounting the symbols of the four evangelists. Cast bronze, white cold enamel.
