STENDHAL (Henri BEYLE dit): La Chartreuse de Parme. By the author of Rouge et Noir. Paris, Ambroise Dupont, 1839. 2 volumes. 12 by 20.5 cm. (4)-402; (4)-445 pages. Contemporary midnight blue half calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic designs, with small white vellum corners. Binding in very good condition (spine very slightly faded). A few very light freckles on the first 3 leaves, one page artfully restored in volume 1, without missing, a small marginal stain on one page, not serious. Discreet stamp of a former owner on the title pages, and in one margin of each volume. Exemplary, free of any foxing, in period binding. Without the occasional catalog leaf. A very rare first edition of one of STENDHAL's two most famous novels, in rare condition.

First Aldine edition, scarcely found complete with both volumes, of Cicero's philosophical works, printed entirely in italics and in a beautiful later binding. Adams C1741; Renouard p.97f. 8vo, (148 x 100mm). Aldine anchor to title-pages and colophon of second volume, (The last two leaves containing the register and colophon are missing from the first volume, title page of second volume with old repairs). Early 18th century full vellum binding, blue edges. Provenance: some early marginal annotations, partially trimmed and on the title page of the first volume; 'ex libris Laurentii Napolioni' on the endpapers. (2)

GUYOT, Guillaume Germain (1724-1800)- MARÈCHAL, Sylvain (1750-1803)- DAVID, François Anne (1741-1824). Histoire de France, représentée par figures accompagnées de discours. Paris: David, 1787-1796. Rare, fine work covering French history from king Faramund to the conquest of Corsica, illustrated by David's engraved plates. The fifth volume, published nine years after the first and often missing, is present. 5 parts in two volumes, 4to, (240 x 175mm). 140 plates engraved by David from drawings by Le Jeune, 5 engraved title-pages following typographic title-pages (some browning, according to OPAC pp. 201-204 of the second volume are missing, but the text appears complete). Contemporary full calf binding with gilt title-pieces to spine, cloth place-markers (light wear to boards). Provenance: private library markings to endpapers. (2)

First state with the two portraits of Pauline and Fedora printed on tissue paper on the frontispiece, vignette featuring skeleton to title page and numerous vignettes in the text (spotting). Contemporary brown morocco binding within gilt frame, spine gilt, title gilt to spine, gilt edges, decorated endpapers (worn). (1)
