Urban VIII (1623-1644) Testone 1628 - Munt.63 AG (g. 9.54) RRRR Urban VIII, born Maffeo Barberini (Florence 1568 - Rome 1644), was elected pope in 1623, a staunch supporter of the supreme authority of the Church, he also showed himself jealous of his personal authority. He implemented numerous reforms within the ecclesiastical hierarchy and worked to strengthen the Inquisition. He succeeded in annexing the Duchy of Urbino (1631) to the Papal State. He was a man fond of pomp and a great patron of the arts, cultured and humanist, therefore nicknamed the Attic bee (from the bee found in the family coat of arms), and under his pontificate Rome was embellished with important works. A coin of the greatest rarity, the only other specimen is the one in the Vatican museum , in low conservation and pierced. This one, on the contrary, is in excellent preservation.
