Papal coins Clement VIII (1592-1605) Carpentras Plate 1599 - Muntoni 130 AG (g. 29.88) RRRR The mint of Carpentras, opened only in 1586, was finally closed in 1603. A coin of the greatest rarity, the only specimen we are aware of that has been hesitated at public auction dates from NAC 44 of 2007, lot 584, ex Montenapoleone 1, which, in conservation "Strike on the edge at 3 o'clock of the R/, BB," realized 16,000 euros plus fees. Our proposed specimen has a slight edge filing at 10 o'clock of the D/ and a slightly waning weight, but retains a beautiful state of preservation, with all details clearly visible and legible. Truly still a very nice coin and one that is missing from virtually all major papal collections. - BB
