THE CURIOUS FARMER Oil on canvas. 54 x 45 cm. Signed and dated lower right "H. Volz. 1878." In a gilded magnificent frame. In the interior of a richly furnished farmhouse parlor, the old farmer secretly gazes into a large portfolio in which various coloured drawings are stacked on top of one another. Next to him on a stool is the closed paint box, on top of which is a straw hat with flowers and a folded stool for open-air painting. The artist herself can probably be seen on the right in the anteroom talking to a young man. (14004015) (18)
