RISING MOON OVER AN ICY VILLAGE STREET WITH COUNTRY FOLK Oil on canvas. 80.5 x 115 cm. Signed lower right. The mood of the light and the conception of the landscape are entirely in keeping with the preferred themes of the painter, who began as a craftsman in Mettlach and initially turned to painting as a self-taught artist before moving to Düsseldorf in 1885. His pictures are strongly oriented towards Dutch painting. However, he already showed Impressionist traits in his mostly larger format paintings. His winter landscapes by moonlight were inspired above all by the painter of the old Dutch school, Aert van der Neer. (14012410) (11)
