Description
Willy Moralt, 1884 München – 1947 Lenggries
THE RACE OF THE WALKERS Oil on wood. 27 x 38 cm. Signed and inscribed lower right. Old label from the Swiss customs office verso. In sculpturally decorated frame. Walking people are illuminated by the sunlight in the center of the picture as they ascend a hill, with a pavilion with a terrace to the left and a valley with a village in the background to the right. The artist was the son of the painter Paul Moralt (1849-around 1923), a pupil of Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885). However, he is often incorrectly referred to as Spitzweg's great-nephew. His enthusiasm for Spitzweg's themes can also be found in the work of Willy Moralt, who came into possession of Spitzweg's sketchbooks and drawings through inheritance. Annotation: A variant of this painting, which was offered in our rooms on December 8, 2007, is listed in: László Balogh, Alltagsschilderung in der Münchner Malerei, fig. 4 (1400533) (13)
