Josef von Führich, 1800 Kratzau – 1876 Wien MARY WITH THE CHILD AND THE BOY JOHN Oil on canvas. 39.5 x 32 cm. Signed lower right. Stamp of the manufacturer of the painting board verso. "Mahler Requisiten - Fabrick/ A. M. Radler/ Hernals, Nr. 33/ Stadt Weilburg Gase No. 926/ zum Mahler / WIEN". The painter was one of the most important artists from the circle of the Nazarenes, who had set themselves the goal of renewing art in the spirit of Christianity after the Napoleonic era. The circle included Peter Cornelius, Friedrich Overbeck, Philipp Veit, Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Ferdinand Olivier, among others. Führich was the son of a painter, studied in Prague under Joseph Bergler and others, went to Rome with colleagues in 1829 and worked there at the Villa Massimo. A chair was established for him in Vienna. In 1861, Emperor Franz Joseph I elevated him to hereditary knighthood. His last works were the designs for the stained glass windows in St. Stephen's Cathedral. Like the art of the Nazarenes as a whole, the painting is based on models such as Raphael. The colors are bright and the lines are highly refined. (1401512) (11)
