NAKED BACCHANTE ON A PANTHER SKIN Oil on canvas. 52 x 80 cm. Signed and indistinctly dated lower left. The painting takes up the ancient theme of Bacchus. The maenad lies drunk on the fur of a panther, an attribute of the god of wine who, according to legend, was nourished by a female panther. On the ground an emptied wine amphora between grapes. Ancient walls can be seen in the dark background between vines. Henry made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1842, exhibited in Bordeaux and elsewhere, including historical and decorative works, and produced paintings in the palace of the Marquis de Talhouet in Versailles, for example.
