VEDUTA OF THE BAY OF GENOA Gouache on paper. 15.2 x 23.8 cm. Signature inscription "Caffi" lower right. This small, landscape-format painting shows a group of houses standing on the right bank of the bay in the sunlight, with the "Lanterna", the lighthouse of the city of Genoa, rising proudly on the horizon. In the foreground, a lady dressed in red walks away from the sea, while directly behind her an elegantly dressed couple watches the canoes and sailing boats reaching the harbor. Caffi studied at the Venice Academy in 1827-29, then moved to Rome in 1832, where he remained until 1848.(1400821) (19)
