ROCKY FOREST LANDSCAPE WITH WATERFALL AND ARCHITECTURE Oil on canvas. Doubled. 96 x 141 cm. Owner's monogram "F.W." and old collection label verso on canvas. In profiled wooden frame. A hilly terrain illuminated from the left in the evening light offers a view of an Italian landscape to the rear, which is interrupted on the left by a waterfall bordered on the front left by an Arcadian arched bridge as an architectural element. On the right is a bare, striking rock, which lends the present painting a special charm and divides the picture vertically. Well-portrayed figures alongside the silvery, swaying foliage create a lively atmosphere in the midst of the gentle yet varied landscape. In very fine condition. Annotation: The painting by Boudewyns in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels (59.5 x 86 cm) is particularly comparable, although the figures are attributed to Peeter Bout (1658-1719), as is perhaps also the case with the present painting. Literature: Cf. Jan De Maere, Marie Wabbes, Illustrated dictionary of 17th century Flemish painters, Brussels 1994, p. 146, where the large format is also characterized by delicate foliage, with a waterfall running through the picture. The arched bridge can also be found in several of his works. (13700210) (13)
