Shown in a contemporary oval against a dark background, with emphasized, ruffled décolleté, the right hand covering the neckline with a fur trim. The appealing gaze is directed at the viewer. The very high quality of the painting of the face, which contrasts with the treatment of the fabric, reveals the collaboration in the studio of a painter of distinction with assistants. The previous owner's tradition mentions the name Francois d'Aubigné, marquise de Maintenon (1635-1719), the mistress and morganatic wife of Louis XIV.
