Sitting on a tavern chair, with a smoking pipe in his hand and a mug beside him, a peasant is resting. In the foreground are a dog eating something from his bowl, a cat looking anxiously at the landlady and a small side table with tobacco, a half-full bottle and a leaning axle. These are depicted in great detail, the lighting effect is heightened with white and the color application is richly transferred. In the background is the landlady, leaning against a large pot placed on the fire. To the right, a farmer leaves the inn. The background is depicted with a slightly off-centered perspective, the objects and the architecture are roughly defined and the application of paint is also thin and sketchy.
