Jan Miense Molenaer, 1609/10 Haarlem – 1668 ebenda

MUSICIAN IN AN INN Oil on wood. 29.5 x 22.8 cm. Signed "J Molenaer" lower left. In decorative gilt frame. In the interior of an inn a seated man singing and playing the violin, next to him a seated woman accompanying him in song. To her right, behind a wooden barrel, a man has fallen asleep with his head bowed, while in the background on the left the landlady looks at the musicians with interest, holding a tall, full glass. Painting in predominantly beige-brown and reddish colors. Sporadic retouching. Trained by Frans Hals the Elder (1580-1666) and husband of the painter Judith Leyster (1600/10-1660). Molenaer went to Amsterdam in 1648 and worked together with Jan Lievens (1607-1674).(1402231) (1) (18)
