SAINT CATHERINE O…
Description

Bologneser Schule der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA Oil on canvas. 65 x 54 cm. In a magnificent frame. Against a black background, the half-portrait of the saint, who has raised her head with a golden crown and pearl decoration, as well as her large, shining dark eyes to the heavens. She is wearing a light blue dress with a black border of pearls at the neckline. Over this is a reddish cloak lined with precious white ermine. She has carefully placed her left hand with its delicate, slightly splayed fingers on her chest. Both the crown and the precious clothing are a reference to her royal origins and to the martyrdom that the king's daughter suffered at the hands of Emperor Maxentius. High-quality painting whose strong play of light and dark is reminiscent of the works of Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio (1570/71-1610). (14008519) (18)
