Peter Paul Rubens, 1577 Siegen – 1640 Antwerpen, nach THE HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT ANNA Oil on canvas. Doubled. 123 x 103 cm. In a gilded frame. Based on the painting in the Prado in Madrid (115 x 90 cm, no. 1639), this work depicts the Holy Mother of God with her breast uncovered and the Christ Child standing on her lap. Behind him is Saint Anne with a soft smile and velum-like headscarf, on the right in front of an architectural set piece Joseph resting his head on his hand. The painting in the Prado was chosen by Velazquez for the "Salas de los Capitulos" in the Escorial and was judged by Padre de los Santos at the end of the 17th century as "Lo mejor que hay en esta Casa al sentir de muchos".
