ADONIS WITH THE DOG Oil on canvas. Doubled. 110 x 91 cm. In partially gilded, ornamentally decorated frame. Arcadian youth facing right accompanied by a dog in front of an open landscape. The C-shape of the body composition, open to the right, can be found several times in Loth's oeuvre, for example in a "Johannes dem Täufer", which was last exhibited at Lempertz in 2014. Born in Munich, the painter received his first training from his father, but then went to Rome and Venice. There he came into contact with Baroque painters such as Giovanni Battista Langetti (1625-1676) and Antonio Zanchi (1631-1722) and also created large-format altarpieces for Venetian churches after 1670. He and his workshop received numerous commissions in Austria, Bohemia and Bavaria, with Johann Michael Rottmayr (1654-1730) also standing out among his pupils. Loth's oeuvre as a whole therefore largely departed from the Munich school and clearly adopted the Italian style. Literature: Cf.
