NOLI ME TANGERE Oil on wood, some parquetry on verso. 34.5 x 51.5 cm. According to the Gospel of John, Mary Magdalene was the first to encounter the risen Christ. This narrative is depicted in the present painting. Christ stands in a landscaped garden with a broad straw hat and a white robe hanging down over his right shoulder. His red stigmata on his hands and feet are clearly recognizable. In front of him kneels Mary Magdalene, her long dark blonde hair partly loose, wearing a robe with the color triad yellow, red and blue. She is depicted here with her attribute, a filled glass ointment jar on the ground. She does not recognize the Risen Christ at first and thinks he is a gardener. The moment when she recognizes him and slightly spreads out her arms is depicted. When she wants to touch Christ, he is said to have replied: "Noli me tangere" (Do not touch me), which is recognizable by his arms stretched out downwards. Narrative depiction under a yellow-red and blue sky slightly discolored by the sunrise. Sporadic rests, upper corners slightly damaged. (14008912) (18)
