Signed "JH Roos fec 1671" lower right and signed "JH Roos fe 1674" lower left. The two small-format paintings worked as counterparts. Each with a view of a landscape with a staffage of figures. In the first painting, a towering rock face on the left edge of the picture serves as a repoussoir, with several herd animals in the foreground and a couple on the left. The view extends as far as the horizon, over a small village with a light blue sky and clouds drifting above. The counterpart shows a lonely shepherd with his cattle in a rocky landscape. The left side of the composition opens up to the wide horizon and a ruin can still be seen in the late light. The two pictures are atmospheric and thematic, depicting a morning and evening scene of shepherds respectively.
