David Teniers the Younger (1610 Antwerp - 1690 Brussels) Surroundings Fish sellers and traders and fishermen landing in a harbor A lively harbor scene is depicted in front of a mighty fortification on the left and the sea receding into the background on the right. Dominating the foreground on the pier is a small group of fishmongers and fishmongers negotiating the sale of freshly caught fish with their assistants, one pointing to the sea and fishing boats in the background, the other standing bent over an anchor. Meanwhile, fishermen pull their nets into the boat or ashore in the water. The painting was probably created in the second half of the 17th century in the immediate vicinity of Teniers, who is known to have painted similar fishing and harbor scenes. These include a harbor painting with fishermen from the 1660s documented by the RKD in The Hague and a tapestry with a fishing quay made in Brussels in 1701 after a model by Teniers in Mannheim Palace, which shows an almost identical tower to the present painting.
