Description
Martin Johann Schmidt, Kremser Schmidt, 1718 Grafenwörth b. Krems – 1801 Stein an der Donau/ Niederösterreich, zugeschrieben
MARIA IMMACULATA IN THE CLOUDS BETWEEN SAINTS Oil on canvas. 77 x 55 cm. In a gilded, wide frame decorated in relief. Oil bozetto presumably for a large-format altarpiece. In the center Mary standing on the globe and the dragon with her hands folded to the left, but looking upwards to the right, where God the Father can be seen above her with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Mary's nimbus is framed by stars. Surrounding her like a gloriole in a standing oval are several saints with their respective attributes. Schmidt created several scenes of the Immaculata that are easily comparable with the present painting and thus confirm the attribution. For example, a sketch from around 1779 after the altarpiece in the Gumpendorf parish church (Belvedere inv. no. SLM 43), see illustration. (14008952) (13)
