Jacopo Carrucci Di Pontormo, 1494 – 1556/57, Werkstatt/ Nachfolge

HIERONYMUS IN ADORATION OF THE CROSS Oil on walnut. 39 x 27.5 cm. Unframed. This small panel depicts the well-known theme in an unusual Mannerist style. The saint, highly agitated in front of a dark rocky background, holds the cross in his left hand far away from him in the light zone of the cloudy sky, while he strikes his chest with a stone. The lion looks menacingly at the viewer. His posture and coloration, with the red in his cape and cardinal's hat shining out of itself, betray Italian Mannerism. Labels on the reverse and previous assumptions give incorrect painter names. However, image comparisons lead to Jacopo da Pontormo. In particular, his well-known round painting "St. John the Evangelist" shows the same bald head shape with a long beard and an almost identical pose. There is therefore no doubt that Pontormo's work is a model for the present depiction. (1400941) (11)
