VANITAS DEPICTION WITH LYING CHILD Oil on wood, partly parquetted. 23.5 x 33.5 cm. Against a dark background, a reclining, naked child with a motto written above it in golden Latin words, referring to the fact that human life is like a bubble that disappears at the very moment it is created. The child, who is holding a bird in his outstretched left hand and has placed his left leg on a dog, is surrounded by several memento mori symbols: a skull, an hourglass and, finally, a large soap bubble at the bottom left-hand edge. The text and illustrations are thus a reminder of transience. Partly rest. (1400898) (18)
