Accompanied by a copy of an expertise by Dott.ssa M. Letizia Paoletti, Rome, October 20, 2021. The present painting is a copy of the work by Raphael in the Louvre in Paris. Although it was painted on a rectangular canvas, it reproduces the curved shape of the original. The depiction appears to be an everyday scene: on a sunny day, Mary has gone outside with the boy Jesus and John the Baptist. She has a book with her to read, but her naked son is stepping on her foot, demanding her attention. The crouching John is depicted with his typical attributes: a fur robe and a cross staff in his hand. Raphael arranges the group of figures in a typical triangular composition. The rounded upper corners additionally frame the picture and reinforce the intimacy. As in the original, carefully studied plants can be seen in the foreground, while the background consists of a lake, mountains and, on the right, a small Italian village. A few fleecy clouds can be seen in the sky. High-quality copy by the painter Paul Jouette, about whom little is known. Frame damage.
