Description

Peter Heinrich von Hess, 1792 Düsseldorf – 1871 München

RESTING PEASANT FAMILY IN THE ALBANIAN MOUNTAINS Oil on wood. 35 x 45 cm. Signed and dated "P. Heß 1831" lower right. In a gilded frame. Two years before Hess accompanied King Otto to Greece, he created this charming painting, which was probably painted on a study trip to Italy. It shows a farmer's family resting with their cattle in the afternoon light next to a haystack on a hill, whose staggered hills still stand out sharply against the hazy horizon. Peter von Hess was the son of the engraver Carl Ernst Christoph Hess. His father had been a professor of engraving at the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 1782, from whom he received his first artistic instruction. From 1800, Hess created his first engravings, mostly depicting animals. In 1806, at the age of 14, Hess was accepted as a student at the Academy of Art in Munich. He was able to complete his military service in the general staff of Prince Carl Philipp von Wrede. He also accompanied him during the wars of 1813 to 1815 and to the Congress of Vienna. During this time, Hess created a large number of sketches, which then formed the basis for his oil paintings, such as the painting shown here. In 1820 he was appointed painter to the Bavarian court. The nobility and royal families in particular commissioned large-format depictions of battles from him.(14004013) (13)
