Yuliy Yulevich Klever, 1850 Tartu, Estland – 1924 Sankt Petersburg ROMANTIC EVENING MOOD IN A WINTER FOREST Oil on canvas. 122.5 x 96.5 cm. Signed and dated "1912" lower right. In wide, partially gilded magnificent frame. View of a high snow-covered fir forest with snow-covered trees and branches, in the middle of which a small stream can be seen, in which the yellow-reddish light of the setting sun is atmospherically reflected. In the background on the right is a small snow-covered house with smoke rising into the sky from its chimney. Outstanding, high-quality painting by the famous artist, in which the influence of Caspar David Friedrich can be clearly felt. The artist was taught by the painter Constantin von Kugelgen (1810-1880), who introduced him to the work of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). Von Kugelgen was a close friend of the main master of German Romanticism in Dresden. When he was not yet 18 years old, he left home to study in St. Petersburg. In 1874, Klever became a founding member of a movement of the Petersburg Art Exhibition Society and won first prize at its exhibition. Several of his paintings were acquired by the Tsar's family, which furthered his enormous rise. In 1880, Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired the painting "Primeval Forest on Nargen Island" for his collection. In 1881, Klever was awarded the title of professor by the Saint Petersburg Academy of Art.
