PORTRAITS OF ELEGANT LADIES Oil on canvas. 62 x 46 cm. In wide decorative frame. Three-quarter portrait of a courtly lady in an elegant dress with a wide décolleté against an early summer landscape background in the setting light. She has a delicate complexion, slightly flushed cheeks and her eyes look out of the picture with dignity. She has black hair, tied up with a pink ribbon. The counterpart, also a three-quarter portrait, depicts a couple of young ladies on a balcony in front of a breezy and sunny landscape. One lady is carefully tying a bouquet of flowers and her friend is leaning on her shoulder, looking calmly out of the picture. Membership of the nobility could be implied by the precious fabrics of the robes. The flowers are masterfully rendered and the broad and delicate color palette creates a lively atmosphere. Charles Müller, who was apprenticed to two famous masters of neoclassical and pre-romantic painting, Antoine-Jean Gros and Léon Cogniet, established himself as a versatile talent who was simultaneously a history and genre painter, portraitist and decorator. He paid great attention to the faces and expressions of his figures. He therefore always began with extensive studies of the expressive body parts before turning his attention to the clothing and decoration.
