Félix Ziem, 1821 Beaune – 1911 Paris L'ETANG DE BERRE Oil on wood. 42 x 54 cm. Signed lower left. In Louis XV-style frame. In addition to his better-known views of Venice and the atmospheric views of French harbors, Ziem also created other motifs, such as the view of the Etang de Berre lagoon, which is located not far away between Marseille and today's Parc natural régional de Camargue. After successfully studying architecture, the artist undertook several study trips to Italy between 1845 and 1848 and eventually made painting his profession. In Venice, he found inspiration for his works, particularly still lifes, portraits and landscapes. He can be attributed to the Barbizon school. In 1857, the French government made him a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Provenance: Loudmer, Hôtel Drouot February 23, 1997.
