Frans Vervloet, 1795 Mechelen – 1872 Venedig, Nachfolge des BEGINNING OF THE CANAL GRANDE IN VENICE Oil on canvas. Doubled. 63 x 87 cm. Signed in an unknown hand lower right: "F. Vervloet 1870". In ornamental relief and gilt frame. In a bright summer atmosphere the beginning of the Grand Canal with the main portal of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in the Sestiere Dorsoduro, next to it in the background the Punto della Dogana with the Atlas figures holding a gilded globe on which the bronze goddess Fortuna stands - a work by Bernardo Falconi. Numerous sailing ships and gondolas on the Grand Canal, a row of palazzi on the left edge of the picture, in the background the Campanile of St. Mark's Square, which collapsed in 1902 because iron anchors had been removed to install an elevator and whose reconstruction began again on April 25, 1903.
