Description

Francesco Zanin, um 1824 – 1884 Venedig

EASTER VISIT OF THE DOGE WITH THE CHURCH OF SAN ZACCARIA Oil on wood. 39.8 x 67 cm. In ornamentally decorated and gilded frame. Accompanied by a copy of an expertise by Dario Succi, Gorizia, undated. Zanin specialized in vedutas of his home town and, in addition to the usual vedutas, there are also some depicting special celebrations. Other special occasions were also depicted by Zanin, such as the "Visit of Doge Mocenigo to the Church of Santa Maria della Carita", the "Exit of the Bucintoro" or the "Feast of the Madonna della Salute". The historical events, whose reenactment was typical of the 19th century - the last Doge handed Venice over to Napoleon in 1797, who handed Venice over to the Habsburgs - are typical of the work of the aforementioned painter. San Zaccaria was founded as a monastery as early as the 9th century and always maintained close relations with the Doges, so that the Venetian Signoria always visited the monastery at Easter in the course of a solemn procession as shown here. Giovanni Bellini's Sacra Conversazione is also located here. Active in Venice between 1851 and 1888. The painter was called the "Canaletto of the 19th century" due to his popular and high-quality paintings. Literature: Cf.
