SLEEPING ARIADNE With plinth: 76 x 89 x 42 cm. Inscribed "F. BARBEDIENNE.FONDEUR" on the sculpture below the feet of the reclining figure. Bronze with brown patina, on a black stepped stone base in an insert. The figure of the sleeping Ariadne after the well-known sculpture in the Vatican Museums, a Hadrianic copy of a Greek original from the 2nd century B.C. The depicted figure from Greek mythology is reclining on a pillow with a raised cushion, her legs crossed, her head resting in her hand, her right arm draped over her head. According to legend, she was the daughter of the Cretan king Minos, who helped Perseus to defeat the Minotaur.
